Coccyx Pain

The coccyx is the small triangular bone at the bottom of the spine. Some people call it their tail bone.

Coccyx pain is a common musculoskeletal problem that can result from direct trauma, childbirth, or chronic biomechanical problems in the pelvis. It occurs in both men and women, and often becomes a long standing, chronic problem. It causes severe discomfort or pain upon sitting, especially when sitting for any period of time, like driving in the car. Sometimes, it can be mistaken for bladder problems or difficult or painful sexual intercourse.

There is no known definite reason why some people experience coccyx pain. However, if there is an injury triggered by an extreme force on that part of the spine, then inflammation and pain can occur. It is rare that bones in the coccyx are broken, but much more likely that the ligaments and tendons are the ones damaged or inflamed. A dislocation of the coccyx may also be the cause of the pain in this region. On rare occasions, a tumour or cyst may developed and may be the trigger of pain in the region.

An inflammation on the coccyx area can also present itself through other conditions such as:

  • Lower back pain and pelvic pain
  • Difficulty in passing solids (pain, constipation, inability to relax pelvic floor muscles while defecating)
  • Urinanry dysfunction (poor bladder emptying, recurrent urinary tract infections)
  • Dyspareunia (difficult or painful sexual intercourse, including vaginismus)
